MBR1000 Security Setup
As with any wireless router, you should set up security to protect your network. (not to mention to keep the kid next door from stealing all of your bandwidth downloading pirated movies) Wireless security is easy to enable and to allow access to the people that you know and want to share access with. We recommend using WPA wireless protection. It is a much stronger encryption than WEP, and is supported by nearly all modern WiFi equipment. Unless you have a really old wireless device you need to use, USE WPA personal.
Here are the steps to set up the security on the MBR1000:
- Log into the admin console at address 192.168.0.1 (link will work if you are currently connected to the MBR1000 either wired or wirelessly). The default admin password is the last 6 digits of the router's MAC address. You will need to find the MAC address printed on a sticker the bottom of the MBR1000 and copy in the last 6 digits.
- Once you are logged in, click on Basic (in the top red bar) Next select Wireless (Wi-Fi) In Wireless Security mode select WPA Personal. WPA2 is probably the best options since it will use the advanced (IEEE 802.11i) security when available, but will can fall back to the original WPA if a device doesn't support WPA2. Only select "WPA2 Only" if you know that all your computers and devices support WPA2.
- Set the Cipher type to TKIP and AES and leave the Group Key Interval at the default (probably 3600).
- The Pre-Shared key is the password you will need to input once per computer (device) when connecting to the MBR1000. It can be any text up to 63 (at least 8) characters long. for example "NoRoommates", "Lockout5387" or "ILoveToEatIceCream" Whatever you want.
- Save the changes and restart the router. If you are connected wirelessly to the MBR1000 you will need to re-connect using the new Pre-Shared Key (password). If your computer doesn't automatically ask you for the key, just restart the computer and it will bring up the window when you next try to connect to the internet. You will also need to put in the Pre-Shared Key to any computers that want to connect to the wireless MBR1000 network.
That's all that you need to do for most situations. Simple and secure.
